Lago Ampollino

In the remotest, darkest heart of the Sila, Lago Ampollino stretches over more than five square kilometres, falling within no fewer than four municipalities and three provinces (Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone).
It is in truth an artificial lake, which nonetheless fits in beautifully with the natural setting in which it lies.
Lago Ampollino is fed by the Ampollino and Savuto streams; its presence is certainly a benefit not only for the local people but also for the fauna and flora of the whole area of the Park.
On its gently sloping shores we find green meadows and grazing animals.
We even read that the lake holds numerous species of fish (trout, perch, chub, tench, carp and smaller cyprinids). A lively and incredibly rich lake.
The view is excellent and, lying at an altitude of over 1200 metres above sea level, it is an ideal place to find refuge from the summer heat.
Not far from Trepidò is the ski resort of Palumbo Sila where (if you are lucky) you will find some little shop open, willing to make you a sandwich with typical local products such as pork fillet reddened with Calabrian chilli pepper.

When to go and what to see nearby

The lake is at its best in summer, when the altitude lets you escape the heat of the Calabrian coast: the gentle shores lend themselves to easy walks and stops on the meadows, suitable for families too. Being an artificial reservoir, the water level can vary over the year. Anyone who wants to fish should find out in advance about the rules and the permits needed. In the nearby villages, such as Trepidò and Palumbo Sila, services may be limited out of season: it's best to set off with everything you need.

The lake lies within the Sila National Park, which deserves a longer visit. Among the most striking destinations on the plateau we recommend the Giganti della Sila reserve, with its centuries-old trees.
