Introduction: In the Velino mountain group, Lago della Duchessa is an ideal goal for hikers taking their first steps, but also for the most demanding mountaineer. Lago della Duchessa, thanks to its strategic position at 1800 m, lends itself as a starting point for numerous hikes in the heart of the Velino group.

Route characteristics: The suggested route poses no route-finding problems but requires intense physical effort because of its fair height gain, and some care along the ledges equipped with chains.

By the lake there is an unmanned shelter: Stazzo Gigi Panei at Lago della Duchessa.

Route description

Cartore. Leaving the cars near the little village of Cartore (944 m), a cluster of four newly restored houses, you walk up the dirt road for a few hundred metres and turn right onto a waymarked path that enters the narrow and obvious Val Fua.

The first physically demanding pull is the one that quickly climbs to 1200 metres on a path winding in tight coils through still unspoilt nature, rich in ivy and ancient ferns. Although the path slowly bends east, here you start walking more and more on the western side of the valley, at times passing places where you need to use your hands. We are in Val Fua.

Artificial ledges. At around 1450 metres the path runs along a few short artificial ledges with a faintly Dolomite flavour. Here we find some secure chains fixed as handrails.  Walking time about 1 hour 40 minutes.

Vallone del Cieco. After the last ledge the gradient tends to ease, leading us into the Vallone del Cieco. The path always keeps to the left of the valley; in places the vegetation begins to thin, letting you glimpse on the right the western ridge of Monte Murolungo and, as you keep climbing, on the left the southern ridge of Monte Morrone. Walking time about 2 hours 10 minutes.

Prati delle Caparnie. Once completely out of the wood you begin to glimpse the high pastures of the Caparnie. At 1720 m you come across three stazzi (shepherds' stone enclosures), the first of which, dedicated to the well-known mountaineer Gigi Panei, is kept in fair condition and can be used as a bivouac if needed. Walking time about 2 hours 30 minutes.

Lago della Duchessa. The last kilometre to Lago della Duchessa follows the path as it winds between karst humps and dolines, the same ones that gave rise to Lago della Duchessa, a not very deep pool which in summer quenches the thirst of many animals. Like all lakes of karst origin, this little lake too has a typical figure-of-eight shape. Walking time about 3 hours from the start.

Variants and alternatives

There are interesting variants starting from Lago della Duchessa which, as we said, is in a strategic position for reaching numerous 2000-metre summits of the Velino mountain group:

- Monte Morrone

- Monte Uccettù

- Cima di Macchia Triste

- Monte Murolungo and Iaccio de Montoni

Notes on effort and difficulty

The most evocative time for the hike to Lago della Duchessa is certainly the thaw, when the landscape up high is still covered in snow, the lake has thawed and the lower part of the route is easy going because there is little snow.
