Bivacco Pelino (2795 m)

Bivacco Pelino stands exactly on the summit of Monte Amaro, right next to the cross. The strategic importance of Bivacco Pelino lies precisely in its being providentially placed on the summit of Monte Amaro, a place in itself hard to reach and potentially subject to sudden changes in the weather.

Inside, for anyone still wondering whether you can sleep there, no doubt about it. Recently refurbished, it has 10 bunks in "pure wood" on which you can comfortably stretch out with just your sleeping bag. In short, hikers and trekkers are used to this and worse. Better than the freezing cold.

If need be, Bivacco Pelino is a useful reference point for planning the traverse of Monte Amaro from Passo San Leonardo to Fara San Martino.

The only drawback is that at that altitude there is no water: the nearest spring is two hours' walk from the bivouac hut.

To get to know the surroundings of the bivouac hut, read the fact sheet on the Majella massif.

What to bring and how to organise yourself

The bivouac hut is unstaffed and serves no food: you sleep on the bunks in your own sleeping bag, so you need a sleeping mat, warm clothing and food for your whole stay. The critical point remains water: there is none on the summit, so you have to carry all of it with you, allowing for a supply for the descent too. The condition of the building and its cleanliness are rated fair: leave the bivouac hut tidy for whoever comes after you. The contact for the building is CAI Sulmona.

Monte Amaro is the highest peak of the Majella and is exposed to sudden changes in the weather: check the forecast and treat the bivouac hut as an emergency shelter, not a guarantee of a free bunk. For an ascent route see Monte Amaro by the Rava della Giumenta Bianca.
